As with all coconut-based growing mediums, it should be saturated with calcium prior to planting. The reason behind this is because coconut coir “holds onto” calcium instead of leaving it available for the plant. By saturating the coconut fiber prior to planting you are allowing the coconut fiber to become “full” making it easier for the plant to obtain the necessary calcium for optimum plant growth. Cal-Mag Extreme is a good source of calcium and works very well for this application.
